a noncoherent post
Posted by anas on Apr 3, 2009 in London Diary | 6 commentsFinally, I’ve hit that SUBMIT button, and received the confirmation of the submission of my last coursework. A quick memory exercise reveals it to be my seventh coursework here at Imperial, one for each subject I’ve taken up. But I have 8 subjects and so one of the teachers has been kind enough to let go of the courseworks. Ironically, she is my final project supervisor, so I will be submitting quite a lot of work to her.
Whinings aside, I’ve been trying to stick too my plan which isn’t working with 100% efficiency but things are slowly but surely pacing up. The exams are getting near and … nearer :S
I’ve been a staunch opponent of password-protected posts but I might be doing a couple of such posts in the coming weeks. Some of the regular readers will already be knowing the password while I will e-mail the others whom I wish to grant access. But really, I believe in OpenAccess..OpenSource..OpenCores..OpenCircuits..Open[Anything]
This reminds me that I came across this software called GNU Octave. Obviously its free! So what is it? The guys are trying to make it a free alternative to MATLAB..I downloaded it…only 50-odd MB in size i think and a DOS-like command line interface. I still dont know completely about its capabilities but the syntax is similar to matlab and i was sucecssfully able to plot a straight line graph in it
Talking about softwares, check out DeskSpace..its awesome!
That completes my noncoherent post..im sure there is nothing to comment about on this post..
one more thing…ive updated the ABOUT page because someone emailed me because he couldn’t get info on my ABOUT page….why would anyone visit my about page?!

I am using octave for half a year now and so far it has been good enough for all my needs. However, I would encourage you to try it out in Linux. The windows build available on sourceforge gives me quite a few troubles with scripts that work perfectly with Linux installation. May be there are workarounds discussed on the mailing lists but frankly I never cared. Linux affords me far more system resources and CPU utilization than the gluttonous Vista to ever think of doing any serious work with the latter until absolutely necessary.
And if you find the DeskSpace thing cool, you may like to see screenshots of something Linux community has for free for about two years now:

Oh yes, I’m aware of the original idea source of deskspace…infact i loved the multiple workspaces feature in ubuntu and was missing it in vista so resorted to deskspace
currently i hv only vista installed in this fresh pc but i will try octave in linux as soon as i reinstall it
All the best with your studies…. I think its old-fashioned but I heard it some where…my son has studied from IMPERIAL COLLEGE heheh…some old dialogue…I think…
I do keep my about page updated as well…but not many people visit… maybe you got stalkers or something…
Hey, best of luck with ur exams
)
btw. what’s your final project about? (u can write a line or two whenever u have time
@UTP
oh and btw, i do hv stalkers!
thanks
@Ahmar
thanks..samajh mein ayega to likhoonga na
Dude! Loved Octave! Really cool…. But as long as I can download MATLAB for Linux its going to the the defacto math cruncher! Though I would love something which compares to Visual Studio and Xilinx ISE! Man those two are the only reasons I still use windows! Oh yes and OpenGL sucks! BIGTIME! Love DirectX…. 9.0 was sweet, 10 is a bit fancy.
Hoping to buy a new PC, my laptop just cant handle the load anymore!
