Discoverability & Visibility
Posted by anas on Feb 12, 2009 in Uncategorized | 5 commentsOut of sheer boredom (and recalling the opening scenes of Wanted) I started typing my name in Google. The auto suggest feature of Google took me surprise. Below is a screenshot of Google’s suggestions.
Obviously, searching for anas imtiaz, the first result was this website. Not only this blog, but my facebook profile, twitter, jaiku and imperial blog also ranked hihgly in this search result. Aur koi anas imtiaz nai hai??
Curiousity crept in and I decided to do some research on my visibility on the web. Searching for anas, my blog came up on the 4th page i.e. within the first 40 results. The search keywords anas pakistan, anas imperial and anas blog produced my blogs on the first page of the results.
The point here is not (entirely) to brag about my blog being ranked somewhat nicely on Google but the uncomfortable fact that I can be found so easily with a few clicks.
This is advantageous to an extent; I can be easily found. Yet this is also the disadvantage, I cannot hide!

lolz….With great cause comes great risk….
I simply love this google. i am not an active guy in terms of web but still if u type my name u will get my linkedin profile…my comments on various blog.They have an awesome algo/technique.
So i found another way round…using MAK instead of Awais Karim where ever i blog/comment….improvisation
u have a beautiful name Anas but i never thought its so unique that there are hardly any other anas imtiaz(es) around
….now u might understand the reason for not using my name around the blogosphere
@MAK
oh and i love google too!
where is the great cause?
@karachiwali
well obviously there are others, i dont find a user id easily
I guess your namesakes aren’t as active as you are on the web. I don’t think it is a very common name (unlike mine). I don’t know any other Anas but you if that’s some indication. Searching for `raza abbas` has my blog as the first result but searching for just `raza` has it figuring on the 5th page.
Great cause….writing about urself..discovering urself…trying to point out flaws in the system and the list goes on (yeah i am out of ideas
) still its a good cause
