Gulzar Kiyani's Revelations Are Futile
Posted by anas on Jun 3, 2008 in Pakistan | 16 commentsLt. Gen (r) Jamshed Gulzar Kiyani, in an interview, explained in excruciating details the dark past of General (r) Pervez Musharraf. Some politicians (at least one, for sure) and the media is giving this a wide coverage. Others are congratulating the retired army man for spilling out his guts on free and fair media. Sure, but why did he do this after serving as the Corps Commander of the all-sensitive Rawalpindi Corps shortly after the 1999 coup and then later serving as the Chairman of Federal Public Service Commission, from which he was recently removed. In fact, in the interview he claimed he “doesn’t know why Musharraf made him the Chairman of FPSC.” So why did he take up the job? Probably he doesn’t know.
The allegations or comments lack credibility and are worthless now because they have come at a time when a similar campaign is being run by Nawaz Sharif and these comments at this time merely add to that. Perhaps, the so-called revelations would’ve held worth had the retired lieutenant general spoken earlier while serving in the army and following the commands of his boss. Serving his complete tenure, and not doing anything at that time makes him equally liable and responsible (maybe more) for the turbulent times now for which he blames Musharraf.

My thoughts exactly!
I am left wondering if you guys even listened to the interview. So many times he said that as Corps Commander he and his fellow corps commanders advised Musharraf against many of his intended policies but they were not listened to. In the army you have to maintain discipline…….tell me what he could have done in his position. Resign??…..and achieve what?? Do you think it would have been wise for him to start a counter coup within the army?? So please tell me what more he could have done except to lend his opinion and advise Musharaff against his misguided policies. At the end of the day, as Army Chief, President and effectively Prime minister (Shoukat Aziz could not do anything without the blessing of Musharraf)… his word was final. Hence he is the one who bears the responsibility along with his other political cronies (who were and continue to egg him on) for the political quagmire that has befallen Pakistan today.
I believe what General J G Kiyani said because he demands an independent inquiry into what actually transpired in events like Lal Masjid and Kargil. A dishonest person would never have the courageousness to say that.
It was sad (but not surprising) to see today how Musharraf’s crony Ret Gen. Rashid Qureshi was saying that the White Phosphorous grenades used during the Lal Masjid incident were not chemical weapons. White Phosphorus has been used as an offensive anti-personnel flame compound capable of causing serious burns or death by many. Just because the chemical weapons convention has not classified it as a chemical weapon does not mean that it is not one or in the same word may not be classified as such in future. Many other, albeit unofficial groups do consider it to be one.
Musharraf should be tried for the following crimes:
Breaking his own army oath and not abiding by the constitution by over throwing an elected government in Oct 1999.
Murdering Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti (for those of you who consider him to be a traitor, was instrumental in ensuring Balouchistan became a part of Pakistan at partition).
Murdering and destroying Lal Masjid.
Ordering an attack in Waziristan and while looking for miscreants and murdering and alienating our own people in the area in the same process.
Celebrating in Islamabad while one of his supporting parties MQM went on a murdering rampage in Karachi.
He claimed he was here to change things when he came to power…..He employed more corrupt politicians under him and manipulated them into doing his bidding by using NAB and ISI. The way he overthrew our first independent judiciary twice in one year and continues to cause obstacles to its reinstatement (by influencing the PPP through his friends in the Bush administration).
He has to answer for all the above………because when an elected government does this…..it has to answer in the next elections……..however when an unelected one man circus does it……he has to answer to our court!!
Yes bro, I did listen to the interview. The point I’m trying to make is that while he was the Corps Commander, he could’ve resigned and revealed Musharraf’s intentions BEFORE the events took place rather than AFTER. What’s the point in crying over spilled milk? He WAS in a position where he knew what was happening. Atleast he could’ve revealed it while he was Chairman FPSC? No, because he was enjoying a lucrative job?
There are many army men who have retired after Kargil event, are you assuming that all were dishonest and that’s why they remained quiet? My friend, remember, that the army took control even before Musharraf landed in Pakistan on 12th Oct. Doesn’t that show the kind of support he was enjoying?
On Lal Masjid Operation, an enquiry must be held. What’s stopping the so-called democratic and elected government from doing so? Punish the culprits!
Attack in Waziristan? As I understand, that hasn’t stopped after the new government has taken charge. There’s more to it. Try looking between the lines.
12th May? The parties who took part in the drama have reconciled (namely MQM, PPP, ANP). So is it not the responsibility of the present government to order an enquiry now? (They were claiming that Musharraf didn’t order one earlier, so is not their job to do so?)
Elected government doesn’t answer in Pakistan! The votes are always based on the geographic and demographic factors. Never, on performance!
First INDEPENDENT JURY? That took oath under PCO after 1999 coup and ratified it? Must be a joke!
I also saw the interview and have this to say.
During the interview retied General said a few times that “Nawaz Sharif was not briefed completely”. Oh yeah? I wonder what incomplete brief could have been. “oh yes the troops are marching forward, but they are headed for a lunch in the mountains and not for a war in Kargil”. Or “we are sending only half the troops”. Or “the troops are not carrying all their weapons”.
What would really constitute inadequate briefing? I am totally stumped. And i am all the more surprised that Shahid Masud chose not to ask this question, “General what exactly do you mean by incomplete briefing?”. Shahid did not ask because he had served his agenda well.
But having said this, i must say that General Pervez Musharraf should have resigned right after the Kargill misadventure, instead of doing a military coup.
And about the inquiry, Nawaz Sharif should have ordered an inquiry right after the Kargill episode. He should also not have made Pervez Musharraf as the army chief.
General Gulzar Kayani enjoyed good postings and all type of favours during the last years under Musharraf. he did not have the courage to speak up at that time- otherwise he would have been removed from his post as corp commander or he would not have been given chairman FPSC’s post . it does not reflect well on Kayani to air such views in public against some one who has been kind to him. If he had grievances against Musharraf or thought that he should give him the advice to go, he should have gone to see Musharrraf, met his former boss ( and benefactor also) and told him that he should go now. To come on TV and to make such public statements- prove 3 things.
1) Kayani is an attention seeker and wants to seek publicity. He could have given the message to Musharraf in private.
2) Kayani has turned his back on his former benefactor. Does not show character on his part- he is disloyal to some one who has been kind to him. He did not have the courage to speak or resign when he was in service and enjoying good postings.
3) If Kayani had been a persistent critic in service ( as he claimed) and Musharraf has been listening to him- although did not follow his advice- and still continued to retain Kayani on key posts and showed favours to him- all this goes to Musharraf’s ( although I do not think this is true- given the political culture of our country and his personality as an all powerful military dictator) credit that he can listen to such criticism and does not punish people who air their views openly. I do not think Kayani intended to prove that point about Musharraf but he ended up doing exactly that- if all he has said is true. I do not think it is true as I am sure he never spoke against 9/11, Kargil etc during service. If he had done so, Musharraf would have removed him. he showed the door to Generals Aziz and Mahmood ( to their credit- they have not spoken against Musharraf yet)- what was stopping Musharraf from doing the same that to Kayani
The question is why did Kayani do so at this time?
Either he wanted to absolve himself from the sins of association that he had committed in the past or he had been prodded by some one else who has launched a campaign to have a commission on Kargil etc. may be kayani has been used by some one else to achieve his objectives.
So true! The last point is very likely to be valid given the time of his so-called confessions. A couple of months here and there, I may have been tempted to believe him but not at this very moment. The humorous part was when he said “I don’t know why Musharraf made me the Chairman FPSC, I never asked him to do so.” That answer was clearly an attempt to hide those favors bestowed upon him. The next thing that IMMEDIATELY happens after the interview (the highlights of which were shown on that TV channel for more than 24 hours), is that a political party jumps in to back that up, just as you said in your last point.
